What are floating bolts? What are they for and what do they do? What do you risk putting them?

- What are the floating bolts ??

Floating Bolts or Floating Dices can be used simply to mount a wheel rim with a different wheelbase to that of your own car, for example on 500 Abarth which is equipped with 4x98 wheelbase, thanks to the use of floating bolts it is possible to mount wheels with 4x100 wheelbase.

- Are they used to mount rims with a wheelbase other than the hub? how do they work and how are they made?

As anticipated in the previous answer, the use of floating bolts/nuts requires when mounting a rim with a wheelbase different from that of your car. Not to be confused with the different size of the wheel hub.

The operation of floating bolts is very simple. Through the conical ring (see figure) the bolt goes to fill the difference in wheelbase and to fix on the hub of the car without causing any kind of aesthetic or mechanical problem to the car.

Here is a demonstration image of how a floating bolt is made:

- What is the risk of putting them?

Installing floating bolts/nuts on your car does not involve any risk, there are even those who consider the floats better than the normal bolts.

In fact, many alloy wheels, being designed for multiple cars with different wheelbasesrequire the use of floating hardware to be mounted.
